Last August alone, six children drowned in swimming pools across New Jersey. Already this year, four children have drowned. Drowning is one of the leading causes of child deaths, and tragedies like these are a sad reminder that accidents can happen in a matter of moments. A child can drown in just a few inches of water within seconds often without any splashing or screaming. But, child drownings are preventable. To urge parents and caregivers to use caution and vigilance when children are near water, the New Jersey Department of Children and Families (DCF) has launched its new Not Even for a Second public awareness campaign. With hot summer days approaching, and families planning to cool off at the shore, lakes and around backyard swimming pools, parents and caregivers must be vigilant with children around water. DCF is seeking community support in spreading this important, life-saving message of water safety to help raise awareness and prevent any more tragedies from happening this summer.
